"In Loving Memory" is dedicated to and inspired by my grandfather, Richard Czarnik, who passed away during the summer of 2019. Going through his belongings, I was moved by the sentimentality and history each object held. Among his things I found magazines and newspapers from groundbreaking historical events like the moon landing of 1969, his high school yearbook from 1959, and scrapbooks with polaroids of my Polish relatives from the sixties and seventies. In an effort to exhume and ensure the longevity of these treasures, I have been exploring ways to transform this old physical archive into a digital archive. Using retro design techniques with a modern twist I have experimented in illustration and collage using the provided content, as well as content I have rescued while rummaging through antique, thrift, and bookstores in the Richmond area. The goal is to evoke a sense of sentimentality, remembrance, and celebration of what once was, and what can be made anew.
The bottom line is:
From my Polish family to you: "Sto lat!" (wishing you a hundred years of good fortune)
